Japan export crisis felt by Australian business
07/06/2011
As Japan continues to deal with its double-whammy disasters this year, the effects are being felt well beyond the country's shores by customers dependent on Japanese exports.
Several major businesses and councils in Australia are finding it difficult to deal with the shortages of electrical and construction equipment.
One Queensland council says its capital works budget has taken a hit because of the supply problems, while Australian car manufacturers have had to scale back their production.
The summer deluge was not the only thing to hurt the Sunshine Coast Regional Council; for last past three months it has been waiting for construction equipment to arrive from Japan.
Director of finance Greg Laverty says council ordered more than $750,000 worth of machinery which has been held up because Japanese factories and ports have been destroyed.
"Some of the equipment had been ordered from Japan obviously before the tsunami hit," he said.
"There would be loaders and backhoes and things that are delivered out of Japan.
"There are delays in the delivery of both the equipment and in some cases spare parts are needed as well. So it just shows that council is exposed globally as well."
Mr Laverty says it means $1.5 million worth of council work has been delayed indefinitely.
"Those works will not be completed or started by June 30, so those works will be done in next financial year," he said.
"There would be a range of impacts that people probably hadn't thought about previously.
"It seems a long way away, and obviously the human toll is important, but there are obviously some flow on impacts to councils and other organisations as well."
Similar trends are being felt in other businesses across the country.
The Queensland Chamber of Commerce and Industry says it has seen a shortage in a range of imported electrical goods.

President David Goodwin says air-conditioners are some of the first products to have run dry.
"It's interesting - you're not sure about the inter-connectedness of global trade until you get a disaster like what Japan has experienced," he said.
"But anecdotal evidence on the ground, obviously, air-conditioning is one quirk that we've seen.
"Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin air-conditioners - they are all in very short supply and actually they've gone to the extent of literally rationing them out."
Mr Goodwin says he has been told to expect delays up to the end of the year.
"If you take it back to the air-conditioning example, the view was that you won't see any relief inside six months but after that you may," he said.
"But if there's one thing that you can usually bank on, it's the resilience of the Japanese economy and the people there."
Toyota Australia spokesman Mike Breen says the company has been working at half capacity in the last three months because mechanical parts from Japan have not been able to leave the country.
"We plan to be back at full production at our Altona plant in Melbourne by the end of this week and back to full production in Thailand or so by the end of this month," he said.
"It had begun to become an issue with supply. We did have stock on hand to meet most requirements but vehicle supply has become short in the last few weeks."
Mr Breen says supply networks are only now returning to normal, just in time for Australian dealers who are starting to run out of some model lines.
"Most of the Toyota plants were unaffected by the tsunami or the earthquake; it was the supplier network that was mostly affected," he said.
"Our Altona plant went to a three-day working week which cut supply to about 50 per cent."
