記事原文 One in four Australians will retire without owning home From: AAP May 31, 2011 8 DECLINING home ownership rates mean a quarter of Australians won't own a home by the time they retire, research from an industry super fund suggests. Superannuation will become the biggest investment for Australians if the nation's historically high rates of home ownership erode further, REST Industry Super says. Home ownership rates have been stable at about 70 per cent for decades, and the needle had not moved by 2008, figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show. The US, UK, Canada and New Zealand have similar rates, while those of Italy, Spain and Poland are between 82 and 96 per cent. By retirement age, 80 per cent of Australians usually hold title to residential property. In 2007/08, 78 per cent of those aged over 65 owned their home outright, while five per cent were still paying a mortgage. REST defines home ownership as either owning or paying a mortgage on their primary place of residence, but excludes investment properties. The super fund estimates the current ownership level is 85 per cent of retirees, and will revert back to 80 per cent in the next 15 years, dropping to 75 per cent by 2036 - meaning one in four will retire without owning a home. Lower housing affordability and higher interest rates dragged home ownership rates among Australians under 35 years down from 45 per cent in 1995/96 to 37 per cent in 2007/08 and was on track to reach just 33 per cent this year, REST said. Given 78 per cent of retirement savings comprise a home and other property assets, a gradual erosion of one of the three key pillars of the national retirement income policy is taking place, REST says. Savings and superannuation form the other two pillars. "The problem with this is that so much financial advice and policy has been developed around the assumption that people will own their home when they retire,'' REST chief executive Damian Hill said. REST is calling on the government to re-examine the adequacy of retirement incomes, given lower home ownership rates. Mr Hill says financial planners, super funds and others should make clients and members aware of the trend. By 2007, only 12 per cent of Australians aged between 25 and 34 years did not have superannuation coverage, REST says. Of those who did, 27 per cent had a balance above $25,000. Among 35 to 44-year-olds, the median balance was $32,283 and almost half were completely reliant on employer contributions to super. For those aged between 55 and 64 years, the median balance was $70,000.
記事原文 Andrew Wilkie calls for live exports ban Tuesday, May 31, 2011 RSPCA Australia and Animals Australia have joined Independent MP Andrew Wilkie calling on a ban on live exports to Indonesia after its abattoirs were exposed as places of animal cruelty. Footage reveals Australian cattle being beaten, whipped and kicked prior to being slaughtered. Mr Wilkie says the live export industry should be banned within 3 years and exports to Indonesia should be stopped immediately. Hundreds of abattoirs in Indonesia slaughter Australian animals, around 6.5 million cattle have been shipped to the country in the last 20 years. Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig says he has ordered an immediate investigation into the footage.
AAP THE Federal Government has moved to suspend live animal exports to a number of killing facilities in Indonesia. Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig said the decision was based on footage collected by Animals Australia that showed cattle being mistreated before slaughter. "I have decided to halt the trade of live animals to the facilities identified by the footage," he said today. Animals Australia, the RSPCA, and the Australian Greens and independent MP Andrew Wilkie, demanded the government end live cattle exports to Indonesia. [広告] VPS

記事原文 Home loan defaults up as households feel stress From: Herald Sun May 27, 2011 12:00AM HOME loan defaults continue to soar as more households crumble under financial stress and fail to make mortgage repayments. As banks and other lenders forecast a rise in mortgage stress, a new report from Fitch Ratings found a 30 per cent increase in arrears during the three months to March. Fitch, which measures the risk level of mortgages that have been packaged and sold as securities, said the proportion of customers at least 30 days late was 1.79 per cent, compared with 1.37 per cent three months earlier. Fitch associate director James Zanesi said the increase pushed delinquencies in Low-doc defaults of 30 days or more climbed to 6.74 per cent at the end of March, topping even their 6.7 per cent peak during the global financial crisis. Mr Zanesi said the main causes were households struggling to cope with a Christmas debt hangover, the impact of floods and the November interest rate rise. "Mortgage performance was expected to worsen in the first quarter of 2011, driven mainly by the usual impact that Christmas spending and holidays have on first-quarter performance," he said yesterday. "The increase in arrears is, however, higher than expected." Financial Counselling Australia chief executive Fiona Guthrie was concerned the trend could worsen. "The overhang from Christmas spending clearly happens each year, but we haven't seen the same spike before," Ms Guthrie said. "Our fear is that this is not a one-off spike." Consumer Action Law Centre chief executive Carolyn Bond said mortgage stress went hand in hand with credit card and personal loan defaults and debts. "Sometimes it's not clear which one drives the other. If you're subsidising your mortgage with credit card spending, it can delay the stress showing up," she said.
THE Reserve Bank has warned many first home owners who bought into the market with the help of generous federal government assistance may now be vulnerable to rising interest rates.
RBA deputy governor Ric Battellino said today there were concerns that buyers who bought into the market in 2009, when the federal Government grant was increased, may have over-committed themselves,The Australian reports.
Amid warnings of at least one interest rate rise by the end of the year, Mr Battellino said there were pockets of mortgage stress across the nation.
He said these had been concentrated in western Sydney, but more recently parts of Queensland and Western Australia were showing increases in loan arrears as some buyers who entered at the height of the boom struggled to make repayments.
In a global financial crisis stimulus measure, former prime minister Kevin Rudd lifted the first home buyers grant from late 2008 to $14,000 for an established home and $21,000 for new homes.
記事原文 First woman to top the BRW rich list Wednesday, May 25, 2011
Gina Rinehart has become the first woman to top the BRW rich list, with the iron ore magnate's fortune doubling over the past year to $10.3 billion. In second place is Glencore chief executive Ivan Glasenberg, who until recently had little public profile in Australia. He's also the highest debutant on the list of the nation's 200 richest individuals, with a wealth of $8.8 billion after benefitting from the public listing of the Swiss-based commodities trading firm. The estimated total wealth of the 200 people on the business magazine's annual list jumped 23 per cent to $167.25 billion. BRW Rich 200 editor Andrew Heathcote said the jump in total wealth came on the back of the resources boom boosting mining magnates, including Ms Rinehart, and the recovery after the global financial crisis. 'This is the first time in the 28-year history of the BRW Rich 200 that a woman has taken the number one spot,' Mr Heathcote said on Wednesday. Still, women in general are no better represented than last year, with just 15 among the 200. Mr Heathcote said the biggest surprise was the emergence of Mr Glasenberg, who was born in South Africa and lived in Switzerland for 20 years. 'His citizenship and vast wealth were only revealed in recent weeks as part of Glencore's public listing process,' he said. Shopping centre mogul Frank Lowy, who held top spot last year, came in at number six as his wealth declined slightly to $4.98 billion. However, the Westfield chairman's ranking slipped mainly due to the growth in wealth of other billionaires around him. Andrew Forrest, the chief executive of iron ore miner Fortescue Metals, came in third, followed by Anthony Pratt, the owner of packaging manufacturer Visy. Clive Palmer, who owns mining company Mineralogy, rounded out the top five. Mr Forrest's wealth was estimated at $6.18 billion, Mr Pratt's at $5.18 billion and Mr Palmer's at $5.05 billion. While resources is the source of wealth for most of the ultra-rich on the list, property is the industry that made the fortune of just under a quarter of those in the 200. Mining magnate Nathan Tinkler was the youngest member of the list at 35, with a $1.01 billion fortune, while property investor David Mandie was the oldest, at 92, with a $263 million fortune. Former federal coalition leader Malcolm Turnbull, now an opposition frontbencher, was on last year's list as the wealthiest politician, but dropped off the top 200 this year.

Their actions were viewed as extremely dangerous and they were immediately sacked from the plant. A response from Santos was not available last night. Employers across the nation have cracked down on the planking act, with dismissals reported across the country. The act involves a person lying face down on an object and keeping their body rigid while being photographed. It began as an internet craze and is being performed in schools and workplaces throughout the country. A Brisbane man died last week while planking after he fell from a 5cm wide balcony railing on the seventh floor of an apartment building. Sam Newman also caused controversy this week after photographs emerged of him planking on the balcony railing of his 40th floor Port Melbourne apartment. Despite the danger of the act, the Planking Australia Facebook page continues to attract followers and last night had 149,425 fans.

Japan's economy plunged back into recession in January-March due to the impact of the March 11 earthquake. Japan's economy plunged back into recession in January-March, ravaged by the impact of the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis. The economy shrank by an annualised 3.7 per cent in the first three months of the year, marking the second consecutive quarter of contraction, which is seen as a technical recession. The fall was much more severe than the 2.0 per cent drop forecast in a Dow Jones Newswires poll of analysts and was the first successive contraction since the 2008 financial crisis. It was the steepest slippage since a record 18.3 per cent contraction in January March 2009. Gross domestic product fell 0.9 per cent on a quarter-to-quarter basis, government data showed.
19/05/2011 Japan visitor numbers plummet after disaster TOKYO (AFP) – Japan's quake-tsunami disaster and nuclear emergency have led to a record 62.5 percent plunge in foreign tourists, a government agency said Thursday. There were an estimated 295,800 visitors from abroad in April, down from 788,000 in April 2010, a second straight decline following a 50.3-percent year-on-year drop in March, the Japan National Tourism Organisation said.
記事原文 Japanese electric car 'goes 300km' on single charge From: AFP May 18, 2011 8:13PM A prototype model of the SIM-LEI, which is expecting to go on sale in 2013. JAPANESE developers have unveiled an electric car that they say can travel more than 300 kilometres before its battery runs flat. Electric vehicle specialist SIM-Drive, which hopes to take the car to market by 2013 but gave no projected cost, said its four-seater "SIM-LEI" had motors inside each wheel and a super-light frame, allowing for 333km of motoring on one charge in a test. Its designers say they hope the prototype, a joint project among 34 organisations including Mitsubishi Motors and engineering firm IHI, will be sold to car manufacturers for mass production. Automakers such as Nissan, which launched its all-electric Leaf last year with a 160km range, are gambling that electric cars with zero tailpipe emissions will catch on and, some time in the future, start to drive traditional petrol-guzzlers off the road. Electric cars still face key hurdles such as costly batteries and the lack of conveniently-located recharging points, which limits their operating radius.

記事原文 Australians credit card debt climbs to $49.3 billion - Reserve Bank May 16, 2011 Number of credit and charge card accounts is about to top 15 million for the first time, resulting in an average debt of $3321 a card / File AUSTRALIANS owe almost $50 billion on credit cards as spiralling living costs force them to put everyday expenses and even mortgage repayments on plastic. Reserve Bank of Australia statistics reveal the national credit card debt has climbed 42 per cent in the past five years to $49.3 billion, with $36 billion accruing interest. The $2.87 billion increase has stunned experts with figures showing the average credit card debt of $3321. Debt Relief Australia spokesperson Deborah Southon says the typical family credit card debt is likely to be much higher than the $3321 average with many households juggling repayments on two or more cards. More than 70,000 Australians visit the debt resolution site each year seeking help. It is not uncommon for single households to incur tens of thousands of dollars in credit card repayments with families increasingly relying on plastic to meet higher costs of living. "It's not just the number of people who come to us for credit card debt resolution that’s alarming but the extreme level of debt they are in,” Ms Southan says. "We had a client recently who owed $450,000 and was on a salary of $40,000. She had ten credit cards and was using one to pay off the other. By the time she came to us she was almost suicidal." Ms Southon says it's not surprising that more Australians are sliding into the debt every month, with credit card companies constantly devising new ways to lure cardholder to make more purchases and conduct more transaction, such as rewards programs and special offers. This massive mountain of debt will continue to escalate indefinitely with many lenders charging interest rates on credit card accounts four times higher than the official RBA cash rate of 4.75 per cent. More than two-thirds of consumers’ outstanding debt is accruing interest at the average rate of nearly 20 per cent – a 20-year high.

The judge said that even after he admitted his offending the 51-year-old continued to blame his victim and claim she had instigated the sexual contact. In his County Court sentence the judge said he was satisfied the offender, who cannot be named for legal reasons, abused the girl for his own sexual gratification after supplying her with alcohol. "In my view your morale culpability is of the highest order,'' he said. He jailed the man for 29 months but partially suspended 15 months of the sentence and with time already served on remand he will be free in just two months. The judge also imposed a two-year community based order that includes a condition he undergo a sex offender program and ordered him to complete 250 hours unpaid community work. The father, who lives in country Victoria, pleaded guilty to three counts of committing an indecent act in the presence of a child aged less than 16 years. Three other more serious charges were dropped at an earlier hearing. He told a psychologist he could not explain his behaviour and believed "he got caught up in the moment''. The judge said the man's daughter was about to celebrate her 12th birthday and invited her friend to the house for a sleepover last year. The father bought beer and Vodka Cruisers for the girls and the three played card games, Playstation and watched movies. After consuming the alcohol the victim said she felt dizzy and was hot and she kept falling off the couch. The father touched the girl on the breasts in the presence of his daughter. When the girls went to bed the man went into their room and sexually assaulted the victim again by touching her and lying on top of her. The judge said in her victim impact statement the girl said that since being assaulted she had been unable to sleep, her school work had suffered and she no longer trusted the parents of her friends.

記事原文 Queensland on sale in Japan and UK Martin Fergusonposted Thursday, 12 May 2011 New marketing campaigns in the United Kingdom and Japan will urge travellers to take an Australian holiday in Queensland.
Federal Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson AM MP and Queensland Tourism Minister Jan Jarratt said the campaigns announced today are the latest initiative to be rolled out as part of the Federal and Queensland Government’s $12 million tourism recovery package.
Minister Ferguson said the campaigns would help to reach two very important tourism markets for Australia.
“In the same way that Japan is seeking to bolster its recovery efforts in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that it remains open for business, so too must we continue our efforts to market Queensland post –floods and cyclone, “Minister Ferguson said.
“Queensland welcomed 238,000 UK and 223,000 Japanese visitors in the year ending December 2010. UK and Japanese visitors spent $431 million and $375 million respectively on their trips to Queensland in 2010.
“These new targeted campaigns are about making sure that Queensland’s holiday destinations continue to be top of mind amongst UK and Japanese travellers and ignite their interest to book a Queensland holiday.
“In the UK readers of the popular Mail on Sunday newspaper and Mail Online will be targeted, while in Japan advertising will target commuters in Tokyo’s high traffic trains and subway stations.
“Attractive travel deals will also be on offer to prospective travellers to help create a sense of urgency to book their Australian holiday in Queensland now.
“The trade element of the campaign involves retail promotions with the biggest tourism wholesalers in Tokyo and Osaka such as Japan Travel Bureau, Kinki Nippon Tourist, H.I.S., and Nippon Travel Agency, which have partnered with the campaign to sell holiday packages to Queensland.
“Trade familiarisations to Queensland will take place in May in regions such as Tropical North Queensland and the Gold Coast to educate approximately 72 Japanese travel agents about Queensland tourism products and services.”
“Holiday packages from Osaka or Tokyo to Cairns start from approximately AUD$1,000 including return flights with Jetstar,” Ms Jarratt said.

記事原文 Aussie cattlemen dig deep for Japanese cousins 11 May 2011 All sectors of the Australian meat and livestock industry will gather to extend a compassionate hand of friendship to their colleagues in Japan through a new disaster relief appeal being launched on Saturday. Meat and Livestock Australia chairman Don Heatley said the ‘Together with Japan’ fundraising initiative would provide targeted support to the Japanese beef industry as it recovers from the destruction caused by the recent earthquake and tsunami events. Following the disasters on March 11 and the subsequent Fukushima nuclear crisis and evacuation directive, local famers were left with no alternative than to abandon their farms and livestock. Many will take months, if not years to re-establish their businesses. “Once thriving Japanese farming communities have been devastated,” Mr Heatley said. “The Australian beef industry has enjoyed a strong, long-term trading relationship with Japan and we want to support our fellow producers as they begin the enormous task of rebuilding their businesses and communities.” Meetings with beef producers in the affected regions were used to determine how the Australian industry might best offer its support. As the first step, three representatives of the Japanese beef industry have been invited to join Australian industry stakeholders at the launch of the support initiative on Saturday. Three producers from the Fukushima and Iwate prefectures will spend time with members of the Australian beef industry to share their experiences in managing the challenges of dealing with devastation and change. A BBQ brunch will be held to launch the Australian beef industry’s ‘Together with Japan’ project on Saturday from 10am at Dawes Point Park, near The Rocks beside Sydney Harbour. Funds raised from this event and the ongoing initiative will go toward specific reconstruction projects in the communities of the Japanese beef industry as well as scholarship support to students in affected areas. “We want as many beef industry members as possible to join us at the BBQ to meet our guests representing Japanese beef producers and show their support for our friends in Japan,” Mr Heatley said. The initiative is supported by peak council bodies representing Australia’s lotfeeders, beef producers, processors and exporters.

The Japanese firm will receive about 300,000 tonnes per annum of LNG from the Gorgon project for 15 years, the US energy giant said in a statement on Tuesday. Chevron Australia managing director Roy Krzywosinski said construction of the project on Barrow Island was progressing well with first gas expected in 2014. The initial development comprises a 15 million tonnes per annum LNG processing facility and a domestic gas plant. Chevron expects to make a final investment decision for its other major LNG project in WA, Wheatstone, during the second half of this year.
記事原文 Japan action to go ahead The Age May 9, 2011 THE Gillard government will push on with its legal case against Japanese whaling in the absence of confirmation from Tokyo that its Antarctic hunt is over. The full case will be presented to the International Court of Justice in The Hague today, the government said in a joint ministerial statement. ''Despite Australia repeatedly calling on Japan to cease its illegal whaling activities, Japan has refused to do so,'' said Attorney-General Robert McClelland, Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, and Environment Minister Tony Burke. Australia will argue Japan's so-called ''scientific whaling'' breaches a general prohibition under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, as well as a specific ban on whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. The full Australian case is likely to remain confidential until after Japan responds with its case by March 2012. The Japanese government ordered its whaling fleet home from the Antarctic in February when it became clear that, for the first time, Sea Shepherd activists had successfully thwarted the whalers' ability to hunt.

TMZ reports that many members of the crew have 'flat out refused' to work on Bieber's two shows in Japan at the end of the month due to fears of radiation fallout and another earthquake.
They report that the crew have used the example of Slash and Avril Lavigne's Japanese show cancellations, although Maroon 5 are still going ahead with their tour.
Ke$ha and Anthrax postponed their Japanese tours, Jack Johnson and Spiritual Beggars cancelled, yet Herbie Hancock seems to be ploughing ahead.
Apparently, Bieber's Japanese shows are now in jeopardy because the crew and management have reached a stalemate.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has phoned US President Barack Obama to congratulate him on the recent killing of terror mastermind Osama bin Laden. 'The prime minister told the president it was a courageous decision and a job well done that had dealt a great blow against terrorism,' the spokeswoman told AAP in a statement. Ms Gillard and Mr Obama then discussed the need for continued vigilance in the fight against terrorism and the ongoing threat posed by al-Qaeda. 'The prime minister assured the president that Australia would stay the course in Afghanistan to ensure that it never again becomes a safe haven for terrorism,' the spokeswoman said. It wasn't the only diplomatic call Ms Gillard has made in the last 24-hours. She picked up the phone to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday to applaud him on his Conservative Party's majority re-election. 'The two leaders emphasised the value they attach to the bilateral relationship and to the close and long-standing cooperation between the two countries on regional and global challenges,' the spokeswoman for Ms Gillard said.
記事原文 Aussie researchers closer to HIV vaccine The Age May 6, 2011 Australian researchers are one step closer to finding a vaccine for HIV, and hope to be able to offer a preventative jab within the decade. Experts at The University of Melbourne have found that people with HIV produce antibodies called ADCC, which trigger the immune system to find and attack the virus. Analysis of blood samples also found that the antibodies force the HIV virus to change, making it weaker, said Professor Stephen Kent, lead author of a report on the new findings.
"[But] because the antibodies don't develop until after they catch HIV, the antibodies can't actually cure the HIV once it's already there," he said. "The thing about antibodies is, if you can induce them before you acquire infection, it's likely to prevent infection altogether. "If a vaccine was to make these antibodies it could prevent the virus altogether." The team from the Microbiology and Immunology department of the university are now working on a HIV vaccine that will induce the ADCC antibodies. About 30 million people around the world are affected with HIV, including 20,000 Australians, and the number is on the rise, Professor Kent said.
RSPCA（Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals）をファーマーに甘いとして糾弾した。
Activists storm Somerville Egg Farm to protest treatment of chickens From: Herald Sun May 04, 2011 12:06PM UPDATE 6.00pm: PROTESTERS agreed to call off a roof-top protest at a chicken farm after police agreed to call in a vet to treat an injured hen. Police arrested the alleged ringleader of the protest by activists at a chicken farm southeast of Melbourne. While a second protester was arrested inside the grounds of the farm, other protesters climbed down peacefully before being charged The group carefully picked their way off the roof with an old ladder as police helped activists remove their belongings, including a makeshift portable toilet they had brought with them and the injured chicken wrapped in a blanket. Twenty-two people broke into the Somerville Egg Farm at 4am today and stormed the roof of a chicken cage, claiming hens were being forced to live in "appalling conditions". Jo Osborne, believed to be an organiser of the protest, was escorted to a divvy van by at least two police officers late this morning.
Animal Liberation Victoria president Patty Mark, who has been jailed twice for breaking into properties, said the group had felt compelled to take action. "Five of us have been inside the shed below us," said Ms Mark. "We are traumatised by what we have witnessed and won't be leaving this roof until these animals have some justice." The 61-year-old said the RSPCA rarely prosecuted farmers for cruelty. But The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) slammed the activists, saying they did not understand what they were doing. VFF president Brian Ahmed said the group had no right to be there. "We meet animal welfare codes. How would you like it if people broke into your house and sat on your roof?" he said. "They believe all cage farming is cruel. That's just their opinion." He admitted the farm had some health issues with hens suffering viral infections. However vets had visited the farm and the animals were being treated, he said. "All farms have regulations and this is one of the better farms," said Mr Ahmed.

Only Cape Town, South Africa, was able to beat Sydney to take out the top spot in TripAdvisor’s 2011 Travellers’ Choice Destination Awards. Sydney beat cities such as Paris, New York and London in the awards, also scoring above local rivals such as Melbourne and Perth. Millions of travellers from around the world voted in the awards, with Sydney ranking highly due to its culture and diversity. The result is a major boost for the city in terms of tourism. Sydney was also voted the number one destination in the South Pacific, beating stiff competition from Queenstown, New Zealand. Closer to home, Melbourne placed second in the Australian category, with Perth and Byron Bay placing third and fourth respectively. Port Douglas and Airlie Beach also made the list. Travellers sung the praises of Cape Town, which hosted last year's World Cup. “Cape Town is clearly the destination to beat,” Ms O’Boyle said. "With beautiful scenery, great wine and gorgeous weather, it’s easy to see why Cape Town, which also played host to last year’s World Cup, has topped this year’s list.” シドニー
記事原文 $1 trillion mining potential at Woomera prohibited site From: AAP May 03, 20115:19PM UP TO $1 trillion worth of mineral wealth could be unlocked in the Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA) of South Australia now the rules for non-military access have been relaxed, the state's peak mining lobby says. The Federal Government today endorsed a new plan for management and use of the minerals-rich weapons testing zone, an area almost as large as England. South Australia Chamber of Mines and Energy chief executive Jason Kuchel said the area had a huge amount of mining potential that could be unlocked under the new plan, which will have certain zones ``time shared'' for mining and defence activities. A handful of major mines already operate in the area, including OZ Minerals Ltd's Prominent Hill copper and gold project, and the Challenger gold mine recently acquired by Kingsgate Consolidated Ltd. Mr Kuchel said the WPA contained $35 billion worth of known deposits but its total mineral wealth had been estimated at more than $1 trillion. "There needs to be a lot more exploration to test that, of course,'' he said. "We would expect there would be a number of at least Prominent Hill-sized copper and gold mines - some will have uranium and silver - developed within the Woomera Prohibited Area over the next 20, 30 years.'' A company that has long been waiting on the federal government's endorsement of a new use plan is Western Plains Resources Ltd, which finished up 3.5 cents, or 4.76 per cent, at 77 cents. The Department of Defence in 2009 told the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) it did not back Western Plains' planned Hawks Nest iron ore joint venture in the WPA with a subsidiary of China's Wugang Iron and Steel. Mr Kuchel said foreign involvement in projects in the WPA was "not a totally resolved issue''. Such matters should be solely dealt with by FIRB, he said. Western Plains chairman Bob Duffin said the Hawks Nest project was poised to proceed but there were some protocols to be established with the Department of Defence. Another company active in the WPA, Tasman Resources Ltd, closed down one cent, or 9.09 per cent, at 10 cents. Mr Kuchel said Tasman was getting strong drilling results from its projects north of BHP Billiton Ltd's Olympic Dam copper and uranium mine. "It's looking like another Olympic Dam-style mine,'' he said. "Certainly the magnetic anomalies and so forth would indicate that the potential is huge.'' Mr Kuchel said the opening up of the WPA to more mining was a positive development for the sector, providing certainty to potential investors in one of the world's most geologically significant regions. "There should be no impediment for mining and defence to work together,'' he said. Tasman Resources was not immediately available for comment.

記事原文 Melbourne house price fall largest since GFC From:Herald Sun May 03, 201112:00AM MELBOURNE house prices have suffered the worst start to 2011 of any city, barring flood-ravaged Brisbane, falling at the fastest rate in two-and-a-half years. As households struggle with higher interest rates and soaring prices for petrol, groceries and utilities, official data showed yesterday that house prices fell 2.5 per cent in the three months to March compared with the previous three months. The result is Melbourne's biggest house price decline since the height of the global financial crisis in the 2008 September quarter and matches the 2.5 per cent decline in Brisbane in the aftermath of the floods.
